International Womens Day

Roc Derby - Tuesday, March 08, 2016

Happy International Women's Day!!

Celebrated all over the world, International Women's Day recognizes and honors women's achievements, promotes women's rights and advocates for gender equality. This year, the UN's official theme is Step it Up for Gender Equality, shining a light on the fight for equal rights for women across the globe, be it in the workplace, in politics or just in daily life.

Roller Derby is a shining example of these ideals. Since its resurgence in the early 2000s, modern roller derby has been spearheaded by strong, independent women. It has also taken a stand in the fight for gender equality - not just for women, but for all people, regardless of their gender identity. In fact, roller derby's primary governing body, WFTDA, recently updated their gender policy to be more inclusive, allowing skaters to self-identify, broadening its rules to allow gender-expansive people to skate and pledging to make sure all its leagues provide environment that is welcoming and inclusive to all genders.

If you've been reading our weekly #RCRDSkaterSpotlight stories, you may have noticed a theme in why so many of our skaters love Roller Derby. All of our members recognize the bond that develops among derby players - the feeling of acceptance, of being part of a family. This feeling exists even though our members come from such diverse backgrounds and lifestyles. RCRD finds its members in every walk of life, from college students to professionals to stay-at-home Moms, from artists and musicians to video gamers to hikers and even bikers. We have skaters who have been life-long athletes and others who joined just to try something new and get in shape, skaters who can wear a size 0 and others who pop culture would deem "overweight". Despite the diversity, there is a sense of acceptance - that everyone is equal, regardless of their hobbies, age, gender identity, body type or natural ability. All that matters is how they perform on the track.

This acceptance is not unique to our league. Across the world, roller derby leagues grow around that same sense of family and equality. Roc City Roller Derby is proud of its skaters and of all the women across the world who have fought so hard to make Roller Derby what it is today - a giant international family.

So from our family to yours, have a wonderful International Women's Day!

RCRD in the News - March 2015

Roc Derby - Wednesday, March 18, 2015

Rochester's Democrat & Chronicle has done a wonderful story on RCRD, which can be found on their website, here!

It's a great look at who we are and what we do, with a bit of our history, a description of how the game is played and a few interviews with some of our members, which offer insight to why we play. Be sure to check it out!

Special thanks to Victoria Freile, who not only wrote the piece, but also donned a pair of skates, helmet and pads to refresh her childhood skating skills! You can read her personal thoughts on the experience, as well as her memories of skating as a kid, here.
